With Gale Virtual Reference Library, you are able to navigate through the index of an eBook (where available). For those eBooks that contain an index, you will find the eBook Index link when you display a document. Clicking the link will retrieve the index pages for that specific eBook. You'll also find this link on the About this Publication page and on any other eBook pages for that publication.
The index is presented in pages as distinguished in the print version of the book. If there is more than one available index in the eBook, the main index, as designated by Gale's editorial staff, is the first one presented. There will be links in the left sidebar for you to choose another index to browse.
There are a couple of ways to browse the index. You have the option of entering a browse term in the box and clicking the Browse button. This will take you to the page with main headings starting with the term you entered, or it will take you to the closest term that matches yours. You can also enter the first few letters of a word to get to an appropriate page in the index. One thing to keep in mind is that this feature is not a search, as entering a term will not find all pages with that term, but it will find the main headings that start with that term. The secondary headings of the index pages are not searchable. If you wish to search for articles with a particular index term (main heading or secondary heading) use the Keyword search option of Basic Search.
Another way to navigate is to select one of the letter links at the top of the index list. This will take you to the first page with terms starting with that letter and allow you to page through the index using the next and previous buttons.
| Note: If the index is not arranged alphabetically, (e.g. chronological headings) then the browse box will not be available. The letter selections will be replaced with the high-level headings by which the index is organized. |
In addition to browsing the main headings, cross-reference hyperlinking (See and See Also references) is available for any index that has cross-references. Selecting a cross-reference hyper link will take you to the appropriate section of the index. If the "See" or "See Also" refers to multiple terms ( e.g. See Individual Countries) these will not be linked. You can use the browse to find the country you are looking for.
The links next to an index term have a couple of different functions. A cross-reference link will take you to another page of the index; a page link will take you directly to that article. If the page reference is not the first page of the article, the link will jump to the appropriate page of the article text. If available, you may also view PDF files of the actual printed index page by clicking on the PDF link at the top of your page.
