How to Browse a List of Subjects

Use Browse Subjects when you want to browse a dynamic list of topics, people, products, locations, organizations and so on used in the database(s) you are currently searching. From this listing (known as the Subject Guide), you can select a term and get a results list of matching items, or continue navigating through the Subject Guide by expanding terms and viewing related subjects.

Here's how to use the Browse Subjects search:

  1. If you're not already at the Browse Subjects page, click Browse Subjects from the search type bar
  2. The Subject Guide displays, which shows all subjects used in this database will be displayed in alphabetical order across multiple pages. You may:
    • Navigate the list of subjects using the letter boxes or the Previous and Next page controls
    • Or use the Find box to enter all or part of the subject you're searching for and select the begins with or contains radio button, and click Search
  3. Click through the interactive Subject Guide :
    • Click on a term with a results count to go to a results list of documents (the number of results is shown to the far right of the term)
    • Expand a subject by clicking its plus sign to view a list of subtopics
    • Some subjects have a Related Subjects link, which takes you to a list of other subjects that are in some way related. Use the Display drop-down list to filter the display so that you only view Narrower Terms, Broader Terms, Related Terms, or All Terms (click here for more information)
    • Remember: Clicking a subject term that has a results count will take you a results list of documents for that topic

Follow the link on the Currently Searching message line below the search type bar to view the database(s) which are being cross-searched.
