The remainder of this page is divided into the following sections:

Section 1: Scope

Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies profiles domestic private and public companies. You'll find basic contact information and data about each firm, including the industries in which it operates, names of top executives, number of employees, the type of company it is, its financial performance and more. The eDirectory version of Ward's includes additional information, such as alternative mailing addresses, an expanded list of executives, and historical financial information.

Ward's lists the four-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes and the newer five- and six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. Note that the divisions of Private Households (SIC 8811; NAICS 81411), Public Administration (SIC 9111- 9721; NAICS 92111-92812), and Nonclassifiable Establishments (SIC 9999; NAICS 99999) are not covered in Ward’s as public and private companies are not found in these classifications.

Section 2: Method of Compilation

Ward’s is compiled and maintained through the efforts of the Gale research staff using information gathered from annual reports, trade associations, government documents, company web sites, and telephone interviews.

Every effort has been made to edit for data comparability, but some differences in figures may be found due to availability of data, fiscal year configurations, and accounting practices. Financial data on the public companies is compiled from the previous three fiscal years. Recent reorganizations or mergers may not be reflected in parent company data. Primary and secondary SIC codes are either provided by the company or are assigned by Gale staff. Primary NAICS codes are provided by Gale staff based on government tables of NAICS equivalents of SIC codes. The primary SIC and NAICS codes represent the industry from which a company derives the most revenue.

Section 3: What You'll Find in a Ward's Entry and Searchable Fields

Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies contains profiles of private and public companies in the United States. The main method used to store entries is by company name; however, there many ways to find entries, including by Keyword, or by some other specific field of data using Advanced Search (refer to the Corresponding Advanced Search Index(es) column in the table below).

When you search for entries, your search results will show the main fields of data, enough to give you a brief view of the company profiled. The full entry can be viewed on the entry display page by selecting the entry name from your results list.

Tip: The table below lists the kinds of information you will find in the entries in this eDirectory. Note that not all fields are present in every entry.
