National Faculty Directory (NFD)

National Faculty Directory (NFD) helps you find names, departmental affiliations and institutional addresses of professionals at thousands of American colleges and universities, as well as at approximately 200 Canadian institutions that use instructional materials primarily in English.

The remainder of this page is divided into the following sections:

Go to the list of all eDirectories.

Section 1: Scope

National Faculty Directory (NFD) contains the names, departmental affiliations, institutional addresses and phone numbers of of teaching faculties at American colleges and universities. Also included is faculty information for approximately 200 Canadian institutions that use instructional materials primarily in English.

Generally, NFD lists only faculty members with classroom teaching responsibilities. Not included are faculty members who are not teachers in specific subject areas and who are not in a position to adopt books for classroom use. Librarians with faculty status, for example, are not included in NFD unless they also have teaching assignments.

Section 2: Method of Compilation

The highly segmented information in the National Faculty Directory (NFD) database is verified and updated continuously throughout the calendar year through the use of class schedules, course catalogs, and staff and faculty directories supplied by individual colleges and universities.

Academic course catalogs and staff and faculty directories (two prime sources for this directory) either do not list nonteaching staff, or if they include them do not distinguish between teaching and nonteaching ones. If it becomes possible in the future to list all librarians and other nonteaching faculty members in NFD, Gale will be glad to do so.

Some schools may have been omitted from NFD because the compilers did not receive current class schedules or academic catalogs in time. (Catalogs sent to Gale by any school currently not included, but wishing to be listed, will be promptly forwarded to the compilers.)

Section 3: What You'll Find in a NFD Entry and Searchable Fields

National Faculty Directory (NFD) provides contact information for faculty at American universities and colleges. In addition, faculty from Canadian institutions that use instructional materials primarily in English are also included. The main method used to store entries is by the name of the faculty member; however, there many ways to find entries, including by Keyword, or by some other specific field of data using Advanced Search (refer to the Corresponding Advanced Search Index(es) column in the table below).

When you search for entries, your search results will show the main fields of data, enough to give you a brief view of the individual listed. The full entry can be viewed on the entry display page by selecting the entry name from your results list.

Tip: The table below lists the kinds of information you will find in the entries in this eDirectory. Note that not all fields are present in every entry. The Corresponding Advanced Search Index(es) column lists which Advanced Search index to use to search that field.
