Section 1: Scope

Medical and Health Information Directory (MHID) is a convenient and comprehensive onestop source of contact and descriptive information on virtually everything related to the medical and health care professions, covering the broad areas of basic biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, and the technological and socioeconomic aspects of health care.

You'll find listings in the following broad categories:

Section 2: Method of Compilation

Many sources were used to update this directory. Entries relevant to the medical and allied health fields were carefully selected from Gale directories, federal government documents, state government publications, and lists and directories supplied by numerous national organizations. Telephone inquiries were also employed to gather data and/or verify information.

Section 3: What You'll Find in a MHID Entry and Searchable Fields

Medical and Health Information Directory (MHID) profiles organizations, information resources and services, primarily in the United States, that are involved in some aspect of the medical or health care fields. The main method used to store entries is by the name of the organization/resource/service; however, there many ways to find entries, including by Keyword, or by some other specific field of data using Advanced Search (refer to the Corresponding Advanced Search Index(es) column in the table below).

When you search for entries, your search results will show the main fields of data, enough to give you a brief view of the entry. The full entry can be viewed on the entry display page by selecting the entry name from your results list.

As there are three broad categories of entries in MHID, a table of fields is presented for each:

  1. Organizations, agencies, and institutions
  2. Publications, libraries, and other information resources
  3. Health services and programs

Fields Found in Listings for Health Services and Programs

Volume 3 of MHID provides information on clinics, treatment centers, care programs, and counseling/diagnostic services. You'll find, for example, listings for Audiology & Speech/Language Services, Cancer Programs, Genetic Services Centers, Hospices, Runaway & Homeless Youth Centers, Sickle Cell Anemia Centers, (Suddent Infant Death Syndrome) SIDS Information & Counseling Programs, and many, many more. Listings are categorized into 35 sections.

There are many published and unpublished directories of service agencies that provide specialized health care in the United States; however, these directories are usually limited in coverage to a single health issue or to a particular geographic area. In contrast, Volume 3 of MHID is broad in scope, presenting a significantly larger compilation of programs that provide treatment and care for, or information on, a wide range of medical and health-related conditions and issues on a national level. And of course, since MHID is available as an eDirectory, you can search seamlessly for any kind of entry across the three volumes at once.
