Gale Directory of Databases (GDD)

An essential resource for information professionals, Gale Directory Databases (GDD) is the most comprehensive source of information on databases, database products, online services and database vendors and distributors. Covering thousands of databases and related products in all subject areas worldwide (in English as well as other languages), GDD is a one-stop resource for information on publicly available database products accessible in a variety of formats.

The remainder of this page is divided into the following sections:

Go to the list of all eDirectories.

Section 1: Scope

Gale Directory Databases (GDD) profiles databases in all subject areas available worldwide through an online vendor or batch processor, or available for direct lease, license or purchase as a CD-ROM, diskette, magnetic tape or handheld product. Entries provide detailed descriptions that include contact information, scope and coverage, cost and more.

As defined for purposes of this directory, the databases profiled share these characteristics:

Section 2: Method of Compilation

The online database entries in each edition of the Gale Directory of Databases represent the complete revision and updating of entries that appeared in the previous edition. Information for both new and revised entries is obtained from materials provided by the database producers and online services themselves.

Section 3: What You'll Find in a GDD Entry and Searchable Fields

Gale Directory Databases (GDD) contains profiles of databases. The main method used to store entries is by database name; however, there many ways to find entries, including by Keyword, or by some other specific field of data using Advanced Search (refer to the Corresponding Advanced Search Index(es) column in the table below).

When you search for entries, your search results will show the main fields of data, enough to give you a brief view of the database profiled. The full entry can be viewed on the entry display page by selecting the entry name from your results list.

Tip: The table below lists the kinds of information you will find in the entries in this eDirectory. Note that not all fields are present in every entry.

The Corresponding Advanced Search Index(es) column lists which Advanced Search index to use to search that field.

Note that there are two tables listed below: one for database listings and the other for producer/vendor/distributor listings.
