Master List of Advanced Search Indexes

Use the Advanced Search indexes to specify exactly where you want the search to look for your search terms, such as within the name of an entry, the city or state, the names of officers, or other pieces of information that have been indexed.

The table below presents an alphabetized list of all possible Advanced Search indexes used in all eDirectories in Gale Directory Library. You will notice that in many cases the name of the of the index is the same as or very closely matches the name of the field that is displayed when viewing an entry.

Note: You will find that a few indexes are listed multiple times, with different abbreviations. This may happen when the fields of information in two or more eDirectories, while similar in nature, actually contain very different values and/or are stored in the database differently. Remember, though, that the drop-down lists on the Advanced Search page only allow you to select those indexes that correspond to the eDirectory title(s) you chose, so you will always use the "correct" index.

Activity Code/Text yc Searches for nonprofit organizations based on the organization's purposes, activities, operations, or type, as assigned by the IRS. You can find the list of codes on the IRS Statistics of Income "Tax Stats" Web Site in the Exempt Organization Statistics section.
Additional Formats af Indicates if a product or publication is available in an alternate format, such as online, CD-ROM, diskette, DVD, large print, microform, and so on. The values vary by eDirectory.
Advertising Accepted? aa Lets you search for organizations whose publications accept advertising or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.
Advertising Rates ad When advertising is accepted, this field shows the cost to place an ad.
Affiliation ff Searches for nonprofit organizations using the affiliation field, which indicates if the organization is independently run, or if it has an association with one or more other organizations. Possible values to search on include: central, intermediate, independent, and subordinate.
Application Deadline dl Searches for educational financial aid entries based on the application due dates, notification dates (the date when the applicant will be notified of receipt denial of award) and disbursement dates.
Area Code - - USA/Canada only ar Searches the area code part of a telephone number. It is not necessary to enclose the area code in parentheses; simply enter up to three digits. Applies only to telephone numbers in the U.S. and Canada.
Attendance ha Lets you search for listings based on the number of attendees.
Available Online? al Lets you search for listings where the featured product is available in an online format or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.
Available Online? - Publications only ao Lets you search for publications that are published in an online format or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no. (For publisher/publication eDirectories only.)
Award Name am Searches organizations that bestow awards for the name of the award(s) granted.
Award Type ay Searches organizations that bestow awards for the kind of award(s) granted.
Awards Given? aw Lets you search for organizations based on if they bestow awards or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.

Index Abbreviation Description
Budget bu Searches the budget field for organizations. Entering a zero searches for entries that do not have a value in the Budget field.

City cc Searches for entries that contain the city that you enter.
Company Registration Number cr Searches the international companies directories for listings based on the company's registration number.
Company Type cp Looks for media companies designated as Cable, Radio, or Television.
Congressional District Number cd Searches for government listings by Congressional District Number. You may want to search on both State and Congressional District Number to further focus your search.
Conventions/Meetings Held? ch Lets you search for organizations based on if they hold conventions and/or meetings or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.
Country cn Searches for entries that contain the country that you enter.

Index Abbreviation Description
Database Type ty Searches for database products that contain a specific kind of information, such as audio, bibliographic, directory, full-text, image, statistical, video and others.
Database Vendor Name vp Searches for database products based on the vendor.
Deductibility Status dy Searches for nonprofit organizations based on their deductibility rating: deductible, not deductible, deductible by treaty.
Description de Searches the description field associated with the entry. Depending on the eDirectory, this index may also search other descriptive text fields within the listing.

Index Abbreviation Description
EIN ei Lets you locate nonprofit organizations by their Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is a unique identifier assigned by the IRS.
Employee Count em Lets you search for companies based on number of employees. Enter a number, a range of numbers, or use greater than/less than symbols (<, <=, >, and >=).
Events Frequency ef Lets you search for entries based on the frequency of an event. Possible values to search on include: annual, biennial, semiannual, triennial, and so on.
Exchange ex Searches for entries that match the stock exchange that you enter. For example, NYSE or NASDAQ.
Exhibition Floor Space fs Refers to the net exhibition space used by a tradeshow or event, which may be provided in square feet or meters. Enter a number, a range of numbers, or use greater than/less than symbols (<, <=, >, and >=).
Exhibits at Meetings? m3 Lets you search for organizations based on if they allow exhibitors at their meetings or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.

Index Abbreviation Description
Fee Income fi Searches financial information for income derived from fees.
Fee Income - Reporting Currency yl Searches the fee income figures within an entry's financial information for the currency code you enter. When used along with the Fee Income searchable field (see above), you can target a search for a specific fee income level based on a specific currency, such as EUR or USD.
First Name fm Searches only the first names. See also: Last Name (ln)
Fiscal Year End ye Searches for entries with a fiscal year end (FYE) within the quarter you enter. To search on this field, enter one of the following values: q1, q2, q3 or q4 to designate the quarter (for example, q1 corresponds to the first quarter and includes any date between January 1 through March 31). Within the entries themselves, FYE dates are listed in the format of MM-DD, except for entries in G&W, which are listed in the format DD-MM.
Foundation Type ft Lets you locate nonprofit organizations by their foundation code. This code identifies the type of organization, such as church, school, hospital, operates for benefit of college or university, governmental unit, All organizations except 501(c)(3), and others.
Frequency Number - Broadcasters only fn Searches for a particular channel or frequency used by a media company.
Funds Available fa Depending on the eDirectory that you are searching, the Funds Available index can be used to search for educational financial aid listings based on the monetary information, types of expenses covered, repayment schedules and the like. Or the Funds Available index can also refer to the fund range that an investment firm has allocated for investing in start-ups. When searching this index, you can search for a dollar amount ($USD), or a numeric expression, such as as >1000. Do not include the currency symbol.

Gender Restrictions gd Searches for educational financial aid based on gender.
Geographic Areas Served gc Searches for a particular country, state, region, or city where an organization is active, or where a system or service can be used.
Geographic Region rg Use this index to find entries for one of the following geographic regions when searching for international company information:

Gross Billings-in 1,000's gb Searches financial information for gross billings, which is often associated with the total amount of invoices sent to customers and clients from service-sector firms or private practices, such as architects, consultants, physicians and lawyers.

Income ia Searches for nonprofit organizations based on their income as reported to the IRS.
Income ii Searches financial information for income. This index is only used in international company listings.
Income-in USD 1000's ic Searches financial information for income. This index is only used in international company listings.
Income - Reporting Currency yk Searches the income figures within an entry's financial information for the currency code you enter. When used along with the Income searchable field (see above), you can target a search for a specific income level based on a specific currency, such as EUR or USD.
ISIN si Searches the international companies directories for listings based on the company's the 12-character International Securities Identifying Number.
ISSN ir Searches the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) assigned by the Library of Congress. (Not used for  publisher/publication eDirectories - see "is".)
ISSN - Publications only is An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique, eight-digit designation for a particular periodical publication as assigned by a global network of ISSN Centres; for example, 0022-006X or 0095-6562. You can search on the ISSN for the print or electronic version of the periodical. By choosing the ISSN you are limiting your search to a particular title. (For publisher/publication eDirectories only.)

Job Title jt Searches for government entries based on the job title of the contacts associated with a listing.

Index Abbreviation Description
Keyword ke The keyword index, which is the default selection, simultaneously searches several of the most-commonly referenced fields for your search terms, including entity name, variant/alternate names, contacts/officers, description, SIC, NAICS, subject(s) and others. The list of fields searched depends on the eDirectory you are currently searching. This is a good multi-purpose index to use when beginning your search, or when you want broader search results than what you might get from searching on a more specific index.

Language pn Searches for entries based on the main language associated with the listing. (Not used for publisher/publication eDirectories - see Principal Language (pl).)
Last Name ln Searches only the last names (surnames). See also: First Name (fm)
Libraries Maintained? lb Lets you search for organizations based on if they have a library or not. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.
Library Type lt Lets you search for a specific kind of library, such as public.

Index Abbreviation Description
Medium md Lets you search for database products based on the access medium, such as CD-ROM, DVD, Handheld, Online, and others.
Meeting Location m0 Lets you search for organizations based on where they hold their meetings/conventions.
Meeting Location Information mi Lets you search for entries based on the location of the event/trade show.
Meeting Name m1 Lets you search for organizations based on the name(s) of their meetings/conventions.
Meeting Type m2 Lets you search for organizations based on the kind of meetings/conventions they have.
Metropolitan Statistical Area ms Searches for government listings based on the Metropolitan Statistical Area codes, which correspond to geographic areas or regions, as defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Index Abbreviation Description
NAICS Code ns Searches the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes, which were developed by the U.S. government in cooperation with Canada and Mexico for the purpose of collecting and analyzing statistical information. The NAICS was implemented in 1997 by the U.S. government as its new standard for economic data, replacing the primary SIC system.

For example, the NAICS code 541921 corresponds to "Photography Studios, Portrait." You may use wildcards when searching this index: replace right-hand digits with wildcards to match a general NAICS code and all more specific codes under it. For example, entering one or two numbers such as 53* will find a broad range of codes from industries such as 531210 (Offices of Real Estate Agents and Brokers) and 532230 (Video Tape and Disc Rental). Entering more numbers will narrow your results to more closely related industries. For example, 5615* will find codes such as 561510 (Travel Agencies) and 561520 (Tour Operators). More information about NAICS is available through the U.S. Department of Commerce web site.

When searching some eDirectories, selecting this index will cause a Browse link to appear to the right of the index input box. Click this link to open a pop-up window that will list all NAICS codes used in that eDirectory. You can select up to 10 codes to search on. Click the Submit link and your selections will automatically appear on the Advanced Search page.
Name ti The entity name index is composed of all words (except stop words) in the name of entries (generally the main way entries are organized within the directories is alphabetically by name). The name will generally be the name of an organization, person, event, resource, or other entity, making this a good index to search when looking for a particular listing. This is also a good search to use if you know only part of the name you are looking for. A search using the name index for two words with no intervening operator will find occurrences of the words within two words of each other in either direction.

The Name (ti) index also searches any former, alternate or variant names associated with a listing, as well as the names of any parent organizations.
Network Affiliation - Broadcasters only nf Entries for media companies may have up to 6 network affiliates listed.
Number of Exhibitors ne Lets you search for entries based on the number of companies displaying goods at the event/trade show.
Number of Members nm Lets you search for organizations based on their membership totals. Enter a number, a range of numbers, or use greater than/less than symbols (<, <=, >, and >=).

Index Abbreviation Description
Officers na Searches contact names, which includes both company officers and the heads of non-commercial organizations.
Operating Revenue-in 1,000's rv Searches financial information for operating revenue.
Operator Name oo Searches for the corporate owner or the operator of a media company.
Organization Name on When the directory listing is not a profile of an organization, but describes an entity such as a publication, database product, website, award, brand name, and others, you can search on the name of the organization that owns, maintains, provides, sponsors, etc. the entity. This index may also be found in directories listing individuals, in which case this index searches the name of the organization to which the person belongs.
Organization Type og Searches for entries based on the type of organization.
Owner Location ol Searches for the address in which the corporate owner or operator of a broadcasting company resides.

Index Abbreviation Description
Place of Study Restrictions re Use this index to search for educational financial aid entries based on any restrictions on where study can take place. Possible values for this index may include: United States, Canada, a region within the U.S. (such as Midwestern, New England, Southern, and so on), or a specific state/provice.
Preferred Company Name co Searches for an entry in a ranking.
Premium Income ri Searches financial information for income derived from insurance premiums.
Premium Income - Reporting Currency xj Searches the premium income figures within an entry's financial information for the currency code you enter. When used along with the Premium Income searchable field (see above), you can target a search for a specific premium income level based on a specific currency, such as EUR or USD.
Primary NAICS np Searches only the first NAICS code listed for an entry. See NAICS Code above for more information.

Principal Language - Publications only pl Searches the main language in which publications are published. (For publisher/publication eDirectories only.)
Product Name/Description sg Searches the field that lists the types of products associated with an organization.
Product/Publication Title pt Searches product names, including trademarks. Also searches publications associated with an organization.
PTO classification code po Searches for entries based on their U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) classification code.

ps Use one or more of your past searches, alone or in combination with other indexes, to create a new search. Previous searches are labeled with search result numbers: R1, R2, R3, etc., with the higher numbers first and indicating the most recent search.
Publication Frequency fq Organizations that publish will list how frequently their publications are published. The editors have attempted to be as specific as possible in describing frequency, but considerable variations exist among organizations. Possible values for this index may include: annual, monthly, quarterly, semiannual, 3/year, biennial, periodic, and so on.
Publication Type pd Organizations that publish will list the types of their publications. The editors have attempted to be as specific as possible in describing type, but considerable variations exist among organizations. Possible values for this index may include: book, booklet, magazine, news, newsletter, pamphlet, report, survey, and so on, depending on the eDirectory.
Publications Issued? pi Organizations that publish will list how many titles they publish. Search this index by entering a value of yes or no.

Index Abbreviation Description
Required Affiliations qa This index lets you search for educational financial aid awards according to qualifying factors related to membership or affiliation, such as organizational affiliation, minority or ethnic background. Note that awards may have multiple affiliation requirements. Possible values for this index may include: African American, Asian American, Association, Disabled Ethnic, Handicapped, Hispanic American, Military, Minority, Native American, Religion and Union. You can also search on the specific name of an association, organization, employer, union, religion or ethnic group. To search based on gender, use the Gender Restrictions (gd) index.
Note: Users interested in awards restricted to particular minorities should also search on the term, minority, as this category lists awards targeted for minorities but not restricted to any particular minority group.
Resource Type rt Searches for listings based on main categories of systems, products, and/or services produced or provided. The values vary by eDirectory.
Revenue ru Searches financial information for revenue.
Revenue - Reporting Currency xl Searches the revenue figures within an entry's financial information for the currency code you enter. When used along with the Revenue searchable field (see above), you can target a search for a specific revenue level based on a specific currency, such as EUR or USD.
Rotated Trade Name ro The letters you enter will be searched for at the start or at the end of a brand name. Searching on the letters lia, for example, will find entries such as australia and liasion, but would not find alliance.
Ruling Year ry Searches for nonprofit organizations based on the month and year in which the IRS recognized their exempt status.

Index Abbreviation Description
Sales Audience by type sa Searches the type of companies/consumers to which an organization sells and/or distribute products. Possible values for this index may include: bookstores, corporations, foreign, individuals, libraries, schools, and so on, depending on the eDirectory.
Sales - in USD 1,000's an Searches financial information for sales (U.S. dollars).
Sales - Reporting Currency yj Searches the sales figures within an entry's financial information for the currency code you enter. When used along with the Sales searchable field (see above), you can target a search for a specific sales level based on a specific currency, such as EUR.
Section Heading sh Searches for the category name in which an entry is included, allowing you to search for entries that categorized in the same way. The headings used vary by eDirectory; for specific information, click the title link below that you are searching:
Section Number sn Searches for the category number in which an entry is included. The values vary by eDirectory (see also: "Section Heading" above).
SIC Code ss Searches the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, which are a way of dividing industries into hierarchical categories. The SIC system was established by the Office of Budget and Management, which is part of the Executive Office of the President, in order to provide a uniform means of categorizing various types of businesses and services.

When searching some eDirectories, selecting this index will cause a Browse link to appear to the right of the index input box. Click this link to open a pop-up window that will list all SIC codes used in that eDirectory. You can select up to 10 codes to search on. Click the Submit link and your selections will automatically appear on the Advanced Search page.

In an SIC code, the first digit indicates the highest-level, broad division code; the second digit designates the major group; the third digit specifies the industry group; and the fourth the specific industry. For example, in the SIC code 2047, the 2 refers to Manufacturing, the 0 corresponds to Food And Kindred Products, the 4 represents Grain Mill Products, and the 7 specifically designates Dog and Cat Food manufacturers.

You may use wildcards when searching this index: replace right-hand digits with wildcards to match a general SIC code and all more specific codes under it. For example, entering one or two numbers such as 48* will find a range of communications industries, including telephone, radio, television, cable TV, etc. Entering a third number will narrow your results to more closely related industries. For example, 483* will search only for entries classified under Radio And Television Broadcasting Stations.
State - USA/Canada only sc Searches for entries that contain the state or province that you enter. Applies only to addresses in the U.S. and Canada.
Station Format - Broadcasters only sf Searches the station format associated with a broadcaster. Possible values for this index may include: commercial TV, public TV, public radio, jazz, sports, talk, and so on, depending on the eDirectory.
Status   Lets you search for governmental advisory organizations based on if their status is active or not.
Study Level lv Searches for educational financial aid listings based on level of study for which the award may be used. Possible values for this index may include: All, High School, Vocational, Undergraduate, Graduate, Professional Development, and others.
Subject Category sy Searches for entries based on the subject matter. This index applies to business information resources, as well as special libraries/information centers.
Subscription Rate - Broadcasters only sr Searches subscription rates associated with a listing.
Subscription Rate st Searches subscription rates associated with a listing.

Index Abbreviation Description
Tax Exempt Status Category xc Searches for nonprofit organizations based on its 501(c) subsection. To search this index, enter the subsection number, such as 3 (which covers many educational, religious and safety organizations), or 11 (which corresponds to Teachers Retirement Fund Associations), or 4947 (Nonexempt Charitable Trust). A complete list can be found on the IRS Statistics of Income "Tax Stats" Web Site in the Exempt Organization Statistics section.
Ticker Symbol ts Searches for entries that contain the stock exchange ticker symbol that you enter.
Trade Names pr Searches the international companies directories for listings based on the company's brand and/or product names. This includes trademarks.
Total Assets-in USD 1,000's ta Searches financial information for total assets (U.S. dollars).
Total Assets - Reporting Currency xk Searches the total assets figures within an entry's financial information for the currency code you enter. When used along with the Total Assets searchable field (see above), you can target a search for a specific total assets level based on a specific currency, such as EUR.
Total Number of titles in print tc For publisher entries, you can search total number of titles in print. Enter in a numeric value or a range of numbers, such as 1000-99999. You may also use greater than/less than symbols (<, <=, >, and >=).
Type cf Searches for companies of a certain type. Possible values for this index may include: public, private, cable, radio, state owned, television and others, depending on the eDirectory.

Index Abbreviation Description
Wattage - Broadcasters only wt Searches the wattage associated with a broadcaster.
Year Founded fd Allows you to find entries based on the year the entity was established.
Year Report Covers ys Allows you to find rankings based on the actual year of the data.
Zip - USA/Canada only zc Searches for entries that contain the postal ZIP code that you enter. Applies only to addresses in the U.S. and Canada.
